During the years of development, various railway companies were involved in planning, building and running passenger and goods services over the routes constructed. Original traffic came from London to the station known as Bournemouth West, via Brockenhurst, Ringwood, Wimborne and Poole. Next London traffic came via Brockenhurst, and Christchurch to the station known as Bournemouth East. Only in 1885 was Bournemouth Central completed and the current through routes to Waterloo and Poole opened, making Bournemouth East and Bournemouth West redundant.
